The Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA) wishes to advise the general public and its stakeholders, particularly those interested in applying for Sound Broadcasting Service Licences that require frequencies in FM Band (87.5 – 108 MHz), that it has issued a moratorium on licensing of services in this band.
The moratorium has been necessitated by congestion in the band, making it hard to accommodate new licensees. The Authority therefore intends to carry out a spectrum re-farming exercise in the concerned band in the 2018/19 financial year.
The objective of the re-farming is to free up channels to accommodate more stations in the bands.
This development does not affect existing radio licensees initially as they will be allowed to continue transmitting on the same frequencies until the implementation of the re-farming recommendations.
The Authority shall issue a notice on resumption of licensing once the re- farming exercise is finalized.
