Recently the Facebook Africa team held a stakeholders meeting with Malawi’s communications sector in Lilongwe on the social networking site’s content policy.
Facebook held the meeting in collaboration with MACRA to seek input from stakeholders on what Facebook can do better as well as identify concrete gaps in its content policies and overall approach.
Speaking at the meeting MACRA Director General Godfrey Itaye who was also guest of honor, said the meeting accords players in Malawi’s communication ecosystem a chance to discuss and learn more about election integrity, how to deal with fake accounts, false news, privacy, harassment and child online safety.
“We all have a part to play in making sure that this gift of free speech that these emerging technologies are affording us does not become an impediment to our democracy, freedom, privacy and respect as citizens of this beautiful country,” he said.
Facebook team included the Public Policy Lead for Southern Africa Emilar Ghandi, Content Policy/ Manager Fadzai Madzingira and Public Policy Manager for Southern Africa Thabileng Mathabi.
Representatives of Malawi’s communications sector included ICT Association of Malawi – ICTAM, telecoms operators: Airtel Malawi and TNM (Telekom Networks Malawi), security agents, media houses and civil society groupings such as Youth Net and Counselling (YONECO) attended the meeting.
