Blantyre Smart City committee recently organized all-inclusive stakeholders meeting to gather input for the finalization of the concept for the Smart city project.
Making a presentation, MACRA’s Director of Finance Mr. Ben Chitsonga gave an update on the progress made which included a concept paper and an implementation plan which were drafted in collaboration with Blantyre City Council
Mr. Chitsonga also mentioned that a public call for ideas and opinion on smart city has been issued.
“We have issued a public call for ideas and opinion on smart city and we engaged key telcos and Internet Service Providers (ISPs) on provision of connectivity within the Blantyre City,” he said.
Among others, the project will improve municipal service management and delivery, improve quality of life of citizens, improve delivery and accessibility of e-government services and increased use of internet through improved broadband services.
The mission of the project is to transform Blantyre into a technology driven, sustainable and resilient smart city in Malawi with equal access to quality physical and social infrastructure.
According to the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) a smart and sustainable city is an innovative city that uses information and communication technologies (ICTs) and other means to improve quality of life, efficiency of urban operation and services, and competitiveness, while ensuring that it meets the needs of present and future generations with respect to economic, social and environmental aspects”.
